SEYMOUR’S stunning run at Kings Park in the Goulburn Valley League came to a halt at the hands of ladder-leaders Shepparton on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions were gallant for three quarters, but ran out of legs when it mattered in the final term.
Shepparton got a quick start for the afternoon, kicking three of the first four goals to lead 21-8 at the first change.
Jack Murphy, in his 150th game, provided a spark for the Lions by kicking the first of what would be four goals for his team for the second quarter, helping the Lions close to within one point at the main break, 35-36.
Murphy’s second goal allowed Seymour to hit the front, but this would be the only time the Lions led all day. Shepparton kicked the next five goals to shoot out to a 24-point lead, but Nathan Fowler helped close the gap to a manageable 12 points at the final change, 57-69.
However, Shepparton just had too much in reserve, kicking seven goals in the final term to blow the margin out, winning 17.13 (115) to 10.10 (70).
Dylan Cook, Murphy, Bior Malual, Lachlan Giles and Huw Jones were as reliable as ever, named in the best.
The Lions remain in third position, but are now three games behind runaway leaders Shepparton and Echuca.
The reserves lost by 36 points, while the under 18s lost by 52 points.
On the netball court, Seymour’s A-grade is continuing to vault up the ladder thanks to a 76-47 win, but B-grade lost by six goals. B-reserve drew, while the under-17s and under-15s were no match for Shepparton.
