SEYMOUR has recorded its second win of the season in the Goulburn Valley Football League (GVFL) with a three-goal victory over Mansfield on Saturday.
On the road for the third straight week, the Lions were at the mercy of an early goal barrage from Mansfield’s William Kelly who slotted four first quarter goals to help his team to a 30-13 lead at quarter-time.
The Eagles added to their lead with the first of the second quarter before Ricky Schraven kickstarted a four-goal-to-one run to bring the Lions within five at the halfway point.
Whatever was said by co-coaches Ben Davey and Jack Murphy at half-time must have set something off in the Lions, who came out roaring in the third quarter.
Jaron Murphy and Riley Mason put their names all over the scoresheet, going goal for goal as Mansfield were held scoreless by a rigid Seymour defense.
With the Lions holding a 28-point lead when the final quarter got underway, the home side had to get scores on the board fast to keep within reach.
A goal to Cody George offered some hope, but inaccuracy plagued the Eagles while Seymour’s defense stood tall.
Mason delivered a fifth with time winding down, and Seymour saluted to notch an important victory against a team who had handled their previous two opponents with ease.
Huw Jones was key to the Lions’ victory, as were Lachlan and Darcy Giles, Nicholas Quigg and Jaron Murphy, who ended with four goals.
Earlier in the day, the Seymour reserves side battled valiantly but couldn’t reel in their opponents, going down by eight points.
Jack Radford was pivotal with five of Seymour’s seven goals for the game, including back-to-back majors midway through the final term to reduce the margin to just two points.
However with five minutes to go, Mansfield drilled through the sealer to break the hearts of Lions fans and players alike.
The under 18s game ended in a three-goal win for Seymour, thanks to the likes of Harry Kelly, Jesse Glen and Benjamin McCarthy who were all named among the best.
On the netball courts, the Seymour A-grade side bounced back from last week’s loss to Shepparton to beat Mansfield by four goals.
The Lions led at all breaks, using the four-goal advantage they built in the first period as a buffer that kept Mansfield at bay. Alyssah Chibnall was vital in the final quarter, dropping in six goals.
In B-grade, Ashlyn Webster’s 44-goal performance helped her side to a 71-17 blowout, and it was much the same in B-reserve where Chloe Locke’s 40 proved the difference, the Lions winning that one by 38.
The 17-and-under side played out an exciting draw however the 15-and-under side were outclassed and beaten comprehensively.
Seymour finally play their home opener at Kings Park this weekend against Euroa on Anzac Day.
