THE Laurimar women’s team has scraped through with a win away against Wallan.

After a lot of rain the night before, the ground was in wet and heavy conditions for the women’s, leaving it to be a contested game of football.

Both teams kicked goals in the first quarter, but Laurimar got the edge in the second to lead the half by ten points.

Wallan then came out and grabbed a better grip of the game keeping the visitors scoreless, sending the final term to a thriller.

Wallan were in need of just two goals in the last, but Laurimar stood tall defensively to keep them out of it for the first ten minutes.

Then Wallan’s Shannyn Powell kicked a goal and Melanie Hope contributed with a behind and they trailed by one point with eight minutes to play.

Laurimar then went on to scrape through with a behind and secure a two-point victory.

Their best players included Sarah Campbell, Tara Dyer, Courtney Dark, Lara Hecker, Gabrielle Donald, Calizta Jankowitz.

Over in Whittlesea, the Eagles took on St Mary’s in another tight affair for the top of the table.

Both teams again scored goals in the first quarter but then went silent in the second, keeping each other scoreless.

With a one-point lead at the half Whittlesea were well and truly in the contest but conceded a second goal to the opposition.

The final term was less then a goal the margin the whole time, as Whittlesea looked to hunt their opponents and snatch a victory.

But its inaccurate kicking let them down and they finished the game out, losing by three points 1.3 (9) to 2.0 (12).

The league leaders got dealt their first blow of the season to the second-placed team, who now moves to equal first in the division three competition.

Ashley Fitzpatrick, Kaila Vangeli, Zoe Kendall, Tahlia Brander, Hayley Osborne and Julie Pole were all in the best players for Whittlesea.

It looks forward to Epping next week at home.
