A HOUSE fire in Kilmore on Monday, June 9, has prompted a timely reminder about the fire risks associated with electrical devices.
Emergency services were called to a home in Black Duck Crossing at around 4am after a charging cord on a mattress caught fire.
Smoke alarms alerted the family of five who were able to evacuate. The family shut the door of the room the fire was in, keeping it contained.
A woman and two children were treated at the scene by ambulance, with no serious injuries sustained. However, the CFA said the fire served as a reminder that fire risks are greater at night when we’re sleeping.
“When we sleep, we can lose our sense of smell and smoke can put you into a deeper sleep. It is important to have a routine before going to bed which includes switching off electrical appliances including mobile phone, laptop, and tablet chargers,” a CFA spokesperson said.
“Devices left on soft surfaces like beds and couches can easily overheat and catch fire.
“Never charge a device under your pillow or near items that can easily catch fire like blankets, clothing, and paper.
“Always ensure chargers meet Australian standards, are from reputable manufacturers and suppliers, are compatible with your devices battery specifications, and is free from electrical faults.”
