AT the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea monthly meeting there was a changing of the guard and story time with guest speakers.

Probus is an international association of retired professional and business people who form clubs to maintain a social network and enjoy fellowship, and their monthly meetings ensure there is a regular outing for retirees to look forward to.

The club endorsed Vice President Marje Gillson into a presidency role at their June meeting, and next inducted Michael Halley into the Vice-Presidential role. Mr Halley will continue to be the clubs Publicity Officer

Other club business was both reflective and joyous including a farewell to a much-loved club member.

The passing of former President Jean Edwards was honoured with a minutes silence.

The congratulatory news was that Treasurer and immediate past President Cheryl Manicolo recently married her long-term partner.

The club also welcomed a new member, Whittlesea resident Val Toman. Mrs Toman is friendly with neighbours who encouraged her to sign up.

The greatest short story writer, Henry Lawson

A feature of a Probus meeting is to make time to learn something new, and public speaker co-ordinator Teresa Carlin invited the Henry Lawson Memorial and Literary Society as guest speakers at their recent meeting.

The community was founded in Footscray in 1923, the year after Lawson died and it remains an active community powered by Facebook.

Members, Mick Coventry and Leigh Hay shared Lawsons best known short stories with Ms Hay narrating and Mr Coventry reciting poems he had committed to memory.

Lawson is perhaps one of the best-known Australian poets and fiction writers of the colonial period.
