Wallan’s Big V women powers on

WALLAN had a mixed weekend in the Big V competition for round eight.

The Panthers were well in the game against Southern Peninsula at RB Robson Stadium on Saturday night, but a last term 20-13 run meant that the Sharks stole a march on Wallan to run away with a 74-67 victory.

Dion Stacey and William Stewart were on fire early, and both performed well in scoring 17 and 11 points respectively, while Jon Bailey had a big double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Panthers, who remain rooted to the bottom of the ladder.

There was better news for the women, however, who continue their fine form, taking a two-point victory over the Sharks.

Wallan looked fairly comfortable at the main break when they led by five points, but the Sharks held the Panthers out in the third term from hitting the front, restricting Wallan to just seven points for the quarter.

The Panthers settled when they needed to, however, and eventually took a 68-66 victory.

Emmie Gardiner had an enormous game, dominating the paint with 28 points and 14 rebounds, while Molly Young also had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The result keeps Wallan in second position with seven wins from nine games.

In youth league, Wallan’s men had a frustrating three-point loss to Altona after turning for home up by one point, falling 68-71.

Kaleb Graham led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds, as well as six assists.

Wallan’s women were unable to get the better of Hawthorn, with the Magic too strong in winning 88-46.

Paige Schultz led the way with 15 points, while Olivia Sweet was the only other Panther to score in double figures with 11 points.

Pacers enjoy a good weekend

A DOMINANT Whittlesea put Altona to the sword in the Big V division one men’s competition on Saturday night at Mill Park Basketball Stadium.

The Pacers won the first three quarters by double digits to lead by as much as 48 points going into the final term and led by as much as 51 during the last term, before easing to a 121-80 victory.

It was Whittlesea’s scorers who came to the fore, with Raheem Anthony flirting with a triple-double by scoring 27 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, while Patty Green scored 21 points. Bernolf Abary added 19 points, while Sam Reynolds added 13.

Altona reversed the result in the women’s game, despite the Pacers leading comfortably at half time.

A good first half meant Whittlesea was six points up at the main break but could not stop the Gators’ momentum throughout the second half as they fell 90-75.

Tegan Cunningham led the way for the Pacers, scoring 17 points and collecting 12 boards, while Olivia Dalmau added 15 and Isabella Ryan 13.

Whittlesea’s women fell to a close nine-point loss to Wyndham in the Youth League division one competition, 82-73.

Despite the scoring power of Hailey Cordova, who scored 23 points, and the all-round game of Amy Temos, who added 16 points and 11 rebounds, the Pacers couldn’t quite stop Wyndham in the third term as they made their move.

Meantime, the men’s Youth League division two team made its move, scoring a 24-point win over Western Port.

The Pacers’ 102-78 win was guided by Timothy Halden, who scored 25 points and collected 18 boards, while Joshua Pratt scored 16 points and Kuir Dhieu and Isaac Meewella added 11 apiece.
