DESPITE the rain across the district, Mitchell Shire residents turned out in strong numbers to attend ANZAC Day services on Friday, demonstrating enduring community spirit and deep respect for Australia’s servicemen and women.

Kilmore residents filled Hudson Park for the ANZAC commemoration, with the service featuring addresses from local dignitaries and students. Organisers noted that attendance figures were comparable to previous years, highlighting the community’s strong connection to the traditions of ANZAC Day.

Wallan’s dawn service drew an equally impressive crowd, with local RSL representatives praising the community’s commitment to attending despite the early hour and adverse weather. The Last Post, played against the backdrop of steady rainfall, added an extra poignancy to the morning’s proceedings.

In Broadford, the service was very well attended. Members of the local RSL said they were heartened by the turnout, describing it as a testament to the community’s resilience and commitment to remembrance.

Smaller towns across the Shire also hosted meaningful ceremonies. In Pyalong, residents gathered at the cenotaph for a solemn service held under umbrellas, while in Wandong, a special tribute was paid to the town’s servicemen and women, drawing heartfelt applause from the record crowd.

In Seymour, hundreds gathered along the parade route, with veterans, serving personnel, and community groups leading the march to the town’s war memorial. The service that followed included traditional wreath-laying and a stirring rendition of the national anthem, with many commenting on the powerful atmosphere created by the misty conditions.

Organisers remarked on the importance of continuing to honour tradition, regardless of the weather.

Broadford RSL Vice President, Tim Whitford, said it was great to see such large attendances despite the weather.

“Year after year we see huge numbers coming to the ANZAC service and this makes us feel good about being part of the community,” Mr Whitford said.

Across Mitchell Shire, organisers expressed gratitude for the strong public support. They noted that the turnout, despite challenging conditions, demonstrated the community’s unwavering commitment to commemorating the sacrifices made by those who served.

As services concluded across the region, the resilience and spirit displayed by Mitchell Shire residents once again underscored the enduring significance of ANZAC Day.
