MITCHELL Shire Council is calling on community members to register their interest in joining a new Active Transport Advisory Committee, a group dedicated to improving walking and cycling across the municipality.

The Committee will bring together community representatives, Councillors, Council staff, Victoria Police and the Department of Transport and Planning to discuss walking and cycling options in Mitchell Shire and explore ways to boost active participation.

Council sees the committee advising on a new five-year walk and cycle strategy and action plan, along with an accessible walking and cycling network.

The committee will also advise on community education programs along with safety and infrastructure priorities.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Cr John Dougall said the committee will be an advisory only and will meet quarterly, shifting to bi-annual meetings by agreement. He added that the project provided the opportunity for residents to have a voice in shaping the future of walking and cycling.

“It will include six to eight community members with a passion for walking, cycling, or local advocacy. Council aims to include a diverse mix of ages, backgrounds, and geographic areas, Cr Dougall said.

“If you live, work or own land in Mitchell Shire and want to help create safer, more active communities, Council encourages you to apply.

“Whether you walk for leisure, ride for fitness, or want safer, more connected pathways in your town, this is your chance to help influence real change,” he added.

“We know that strong community input leads to better outcomes. This group will help ensure that local knowledge and lived experience are front and centre as we plan for the future.

“This is about more than infrastructure – it’s about building healthier, more connected and inclusive communities where everyone feels safe and supported to walk or ride,” Cr Dougall said.
