HEADING into the new school year, Mitchell Shire Council (MSC) is reminding all drivers to prioritise safety near school crossings and improve road safety for everyone.

To ensure the safety of children who are still learning road rules and whose behaviour can often be unpredictable, drivers should follow the following tips:

Observe the speed limit: Travel at a maximum of 40km/h in school zones.

Avoid distractions: Never use a mobile phone while driving.

Respect crossing supervisors: Always follow their instructions.

Plan ahead: Allow extra time to avoid rushing.

Park responsibly: Consider parking a few streets away and enjoy a walk.

MSC Mayor John Dougall emphasised that all drivers played a critical role in ensuring roads were safe for children, especially during busy school pick-up and drop-off times.

“Our crossing supervisors work tirelessly to help children cross safely as they travel to and from school,” he said.

“It’s crucial that all drivers follow their instructions to ensure everyone’s safety.

“Adults should always lead by example and cross at the designated crossings. It’s a simple step we can all take to model safe behaviour and keep everyone safe.

“By reducing speeds and staying vigilant, we can prevent accidents and create a safer environment for our community.”
