On Saturday, the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s (GDCA) men’s matches were abandoned due to lightning and heavy rain. However, the skies cleared just in time for the Kookaburra Women’s league round the following day.

The sun shone as the Lancefield and Wallan women’s teams went head-to-head at Greenhills Reserve.

Lancefield won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Nat Jeffery chose India Coombs and herself to open their innings. To open the bowling for Wallan, the home side selected Terrie Haydon and Kia Montgomery, followed by Felicity Vance and Lara Vecchie.

Montgomery quickly claimed her first wicket against Coombs for a Leg Before Wicket (LBW) call from the umpire after two fast runs, while Lancefield’s next wicket fell when Vecchie bowled Jeffrey out on 11 runs on the first ball of the seventh over.

In between, Haydon quickly caught Luzanne Paeglitis out on one run, and alongside Vecchie, went on to take two more wickets each from Lancefield—including one against Tanya Wells who went out for a duck after facing two balls. Wallan’s incredible fielding innings saw the Lancefield side out after 23 overs, eight for 78.

Megan Farrell whacked her way to the fifth over in the game against Lancefield at the Greenhill Reserve in Wallan on Sunday.
Felicity Vance and Megan Farrell paired up to make 21 runs in the opening five overs and hoped to chase Lancefield’s 78 runs.

Wallan’s opening batters were Megan Farrell and Vance, followed by Kerrie Curran and Montgomery. The opening pair established a 21-run lead until a captain’s catch caught Farrell out on 10, before Vance was caught out on 11 runs by Meaghan Lyons.

Curran ran fast with Montgomery who put 33 big runs on the team’s score, and in between, Curran scored 16 runs, including one 4, before she was dismissed by the umpire for a LBW early in the 17th over. Montgomery was still on the pitch when the umpire declared Wallan the winners after 18.4 overs, four out for 79.

Kilmore’s Logie

Kilmore travelled to play Darley at the Mason’s Lane Reserve in Bacchus Marsh.

Darley won the toss, and selected Brittanny and Zali Ward to open their batting innings. Kilmore selected Taylah Logie and Chloe D’Elia to open their bowling, followed by Cath Mogridge and Jaye Price.

In Kilmore’s fielding innings, Logie dismantled the running partnership between the opening batters and finished B. Ward at 24 runs on the first ball of the sixth over, and in the 22nd over, Mogridge took Z. Ward’s wicket at 62 with an ecstatic LBW.

Unfortunately for Kilmore, Darley’s Kim Bessell made 75 big runs off 53 balls and retired not out near the end of the 26th over. In between, Kilmore’s Jaye Price claimed three wickets with streamlined bowling, and the Darley team finished on five out for 210. Kilmore’s batting innings commenced with Logie and Rebecca Maycock facing Kim Bessell and B. Ward.

Unfortunately, Maycock quickly lost her wicket to Bessell after she was bowled out for a duck after facing 10 balls. But Logie remained on the pitch for the duration of the innings and pumped out 65 big runs, including seven 4s. In between, D’Elia made a patient 15 runs off 80 balls before she was spectacularly caught and bowled out by Z. Ward and Mogridge, who partnered with Logie for a short time before the game ended at 30 overs in Darley’s favour, Kilmore two out for 141.
