On the first anniversary of the introduction of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS), the state has celebrated the return and refund of one billion containers.
Residents of Mitchell Shire deposited over 8,234,123 containers alone during the last year. The CDS not only removes litter from the environment but puts money back into the pockets of Victorians.
In Kilmore, the first large-scale over the counter (OTC) refund point was opened at 127A Northern Highway. Friendly staff showed first time users how to download the free CDS Vic North app for iOS or Android, and from there users were then able to select their preferred refund method.
There are now two Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) in the shire which allow automated self-service returns. The RVMs offer refunds for users in the form of a voucher which can be redeemed at participating stores such as local supermarkets.
Motivated by the litter-free spaces, six smaller return points have popped up at various businesses across the shire. Eligible containers can be counted on the spot, and refunds are given in cash.
Most aluminium, glass, plastic, and carton drink containers between 150mL–3L are eligible for a 10 cents refund.
