Road maintenance is set to improve across the Mitchell Shire, with more than $20 million allocated as part of the 2024–25 council budget, including an additional $11 million provided by the Federal Government as part of the Macedon and Mitchell Shire Roads project.
The investment follows council’s approach to maintain and upgrade its road network, delivering high-quality infrastructure that helps meet the diverse needs of both urban and rural communities.
In this financial year, council allocated more than $4 million for the renewal of sealed roads throughout the shire, including Anderson Road and Nannys Creek Road in Kilmore, Broadford-Glenaroua Road, Mia-Mia Road, and Hawdon Street in Broadford, and Tantaraboo Road, Willowmavin.
An additional $1 million was allocated for the resheeting of unsealed roads, with priority locations including sections of Scanlons Road and Stotts Road in Wandong.
The kerb and channel renewal program are also underway to fix damaged and lifted sections of kerbing across the shire.
Mitchell Shire Council Chief Executive Brett Luxford said council’s roads team were working thoroughly to renew the shire’s expansive road network.
“Council’s road renewal efforts are not just about maintaining the existing network but also about future-proofing it to support the shire’s ongoing development,” he said.
The Federal Government’s commitment will see $5 million allocated to upgrade Wellington Street and Darraweit Road between Acacia Way and Roulston Way, with works expected to commence and be completed in 2025.
“Projects like Wellington Street and Darraweit Road in Wallan would not be possible without the extensive funding committed by Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell,” Mr Luxford said.
“These works will bring significant improvements to our local infrastructure, making Wallan a safer and more connected place to live.”
