Sport enthusiasts can anticipate a new four-court multi-sport indoor stadium in Mernda as construction progresses.

Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage joined City of Whittlesea Council on Friday to mark the project’s commencement at the Mernda site with a sod turn.

The new stadium, made possible by a $10 million Government investment, will feature four indoor multi-sport courts and will provide the community with a great new participation base for local basketball, netball, and badminton.

The facility will also include female friendly change rooms, referee change rooms, multi-purpose spaces, a first aid room, storage, reception and offices, which nearby schools and other community groups will also benefit from.

Expected to support new employment and opportunities during construction and operation, the site is anticipated to be completed in late 2026.

In addition to the stadium, the State Government has also committed $10 million to deliver a new indoor aquatic centre in Mernda to ensure families have access to aquatic and fitness activities such as learn-to-swim and physical activity programs.

Ms Kathage acknowledged Council for its more than $23 million contribution.

“This new stadium is a game changer for local basketball and netball in this growing suburb, opening the door for more opportunities to play, build new pathways and host big events,” she said.

“Better sport and recreation facilities make it easier for Victorians to reap all the benefits from local sport and recreation and lead healthy and active lifestyles.”

Northern Pride Netball Association President Michelle Kneale said the new facility meant ‘growth for the community.’

“It means a place where young players, both boys and girls, can play the great game of netball. It means extended training and extended training facilities,” she said.

“Having this facility, we can really sort of bring the best of the best, and give these kids the right opportunities out here.”
