The Seymour Tennis Club has new and improved lighting at their complex in Howe Street.
Minister for Sport Ros Spence officially announced the improvements, stating that improvements were made possible with financial contributions from the Government Local Sports Infrastructure fund and Mitchell Shire Council at an afternoon tea held at the club rooms earlier this month.
The club will now be able to use an extra four courts after dark, and the 500 LUX LED lighting meets competition standards.
Ms Spence said the lights will help working families to keep active and enjoy more social time together.
“We know with the days getting shorter in winter, it’s really important to get that lighting to have extra hours on the court,” she said.
There are around 60 individual memberships at the club, and a growing number of junior players are enrolling into the Hot Shots program.
Mitchell Shire Council Acting Mayor Councillor Nathan Clark said it was a great day for tennis in Seymour, with the collaboration the result of State and Local Government working towards a common goal.
“This upgrade is not just about improving our sports facilities, it’s about promoting active living, enhancing local health outcomes, and strengthening the bonds in our community,” he said.
Club President Bruce Anderson thanked the State Government, Mitchell Shire, the contractor, and all the volunteers involved in the project, and stated the LED lights are more economical and environmentally friendly.
“Today people want to play tennis in night competitions, and the lights out here now allow us to have more people play tennis, and to do it more economically and environmentally appropriately,” he said.
Mr Anderson said the project was finished on time, and on budget, and importantly all-ability access to the courts had been improved.
“This provides another resource for people who have mobility issues. One of the good things about tennis facilities is they last a long time.”
