The Brotherhood of St Laurence recently celebrated the 21st birthday of their Saver Plus Program at the Jindi Family and Community Centre in Mernda.

Australia’s longest-running financial education and matched savings program, the Saver Plus program encourages eligible families and individuals to set savings goals, develop lifelong savings habits, and receive up to $500 to assist with educational costs.

The Honourable Amanda Rishworth Minister for Social Services and Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell met with program participants, volunteers, and staff members on the day to gain firsthand insights into the success of the program.

“The Saver Plus program embodies the spirit of community and empowerment. For 21 years, it has been instrumental in fostering financial independence and bridging socio-economic disparities,” Mr Michell said.

“I commend the Brotherhood of St Laurence and all stakeholders involved for their dedication to helping individuals and families thrive.”

“As Australians continue to navigate economic challenges and social inequalities the recognition for initiatives like Saver Plus reaffirm the government’s recognition of the vital role played by community-driven programs that enhance financial literacy and empower individuals and families to achieve their aspirations,” he added.

Since its launch in 2003, more than 50,000 participants have joined the program, with ANZ matching over $23 million in education expenses.

Delivered by The Brotherhood of St Laurence, the program is also available via The Smith Family and Berry Street not-for-profit charities.
