Kilmore Public Cemetery Trust is undertaking maintenance within the cemetery precinct, with 17 cypress trees removed after being declared dangerous.
A storm caused a Monterey cypress trees on the north boundary to blow over, damaging headstones.
Kilmore Public Cemetery Trust chair Madeleine Laming said an arborist assessed the remaining cypress trees, and discovered they had reached the end of their natural life span and were dangerous.
“They are likely to drop branches or collapse and pose an unacceptable risk to people, headstones and cemetery infrastructure,” she said.
Dr Laming said in keeping with the cemetery’s heritage overlay, only non-indigenous species were removed.
She said the area was assessed by qualified experts who confirmed the absence of any endangered flora and fauna.
“The trust is in discussion with a local tree nursery about suitable replacements that will be consistent with the cemetery’s heritage overlay, bushfire and OHS risk mitigation strategies,” she said.
