City of Whittlesea pushes key community projects

Popular Stories

Funding for a regional aquatic and sports centre, investment in a purpose-built Aboriginal Gathering Place and support for jobs, mental health and transport are among the City of Whittlesea’s key advocacy projects ahead of the state election.

The council highlighted the projects at a recent advocacy showcase, timed in the lead-up to the November election.

Liberal candidate for Yan Yean Richard Welch last week announced a $15-million election commitment towards the construction of phase two of the Regional Aquatic and Sports Centre in Mernda, if the Coalition formed government.

The showcase identified 19 initiatives across seven economic domains, including infrastructure and community services; employment; public transport; health and wellbeing; affordable housing; roads; and environmental sustainability.

Chair administrator Lydia Wilson said council was pleased to encounter candidates, members of parliament and key stakeholders at the showcase to improve Whittlesea.

“The City of Whittlesea is keen to partner with the Victorian Government to address our region’s needs and enhance the economic growth, liveability and sustainability benefits for our rapidly growing and diverse community,” she said

Ms Wilson pointed out the growing population of the municipality, and what was needed to prepare for infrastructure to support it.

“Our municipality is one of the fastest growing areas in the state, with projections showing a population growth of 60 per cent to 367,000 by 2040. This exceptional growth poses both challenges and opportunities for the City of Whittlesea,” she said.

“We have identified 19 key initiatives, supported by our community, that will help deliver the essential services and critical infrastructure needed to support our community now and into the future.”

Ms Wilson said the City of Whittlesea was asking for help from all levels of government to fund the key projects.

“Council cannot deliver these initiatives alone, and is seeking the support from all levels of government to co-invest and work with the City of Whittlesea to deliver these important regional projects,” she said.
