WALLAN’S Kirra Wright has received a boost to help with her athletic endeavours, securing a sponsorship with Barry Plant in Wallan.
Barry Plant sponsored Wright in 2019, helping her to travel to places such as Darwin. The sponsorship will allow her to travel interstate to compete in an upcoming national competition.
Barry Plant director Simon Best said when the opportunity came up to sponsor Wright again he was more than happy to help out.
“With local athletes, it’s hard, [their] parents are having to support them with time and money and effort to get the training and it’s not around the corner [in places like] Albert Park and it’s a big commitment from the whole family,” he said.
“Anything we can do to help out is easy for us but all the hard work is being done by Kirra and the family.”
Wright is classified as a T38 para-athlete and competed at the national championships in April last year, medalling in the 400-metre event. She was also recently named Junior Sportsperson of the Year in the 2021 Disability Sport and Recreation Awards.
She said sponsorships with businesses like Barry Plant help her to further progress her athletic career.
“It really helps because without this I wouldn’t be able to compete,” she said.
Wright has seen success at the state level and will soon travel to Sydney to compete in the senior national competition for the second time, despite being 13 years of age.
She hopes to break personal records in the upcoming competition, having recently broken a record set by a Paralympian who attended the Tokyo Paralympics.
