A 43-YEAR-OLD Mernda man with a penchant for work boots was arrested and charged last week with theft and handling stolen goods.

Police arrested the man on Monday afternoon, November 13 following an appeal by police to the public for information on social media regarding the theft of shoes in the local area.
Members executed a search warrant at the man’s Falkirk Drive home and located a room full of piles of work boots and sneakers.

It’s alleged the shoes were taken from the front doors of homes in the Doreen, Mernda, Watsonia North and Craigieburn areas over the past six years.
He was bailed to appear in Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on April 13, 2018.
The shoes will be made available for identification by the public at a later date.

THOUSANDS of therapy dogs and their owners will join together around Australia on November 25 to celebrate Delta Society Australia’s 20th birthday and the remarkable bond between dogs and people.

From humble beginnings in 1997, Delta Society Australia (Delta) now touches the lives of 20,000 Australians per week in more than 850 health and service facilities nationally via its flagship therapy dog program.

Ms Hollee James, General Manager of Delta Society Australia said that given that up to 40 per cent of people in aged care homes never get visitors, a regular visit from a Delta therapy dog can be the one highlight in an otherwise lonely day-to-day life.

“Attention from a dog, made possible via a dog and handler team such as Delta’s, brightens your day, makes you feel loved and is scientifically proven to enhance health and wellbeing. As more people recognise the real physical and emotional benefits from spending time with a dog, demand for our services is increasing,” Ms James said.

In addition to its therapy dog program in health facilities, Delta therapy dogs visit primary school classrooms to improve children’s literacy and provide stress-relief visits to a growing number of workplaces.

Delta also offers dog safety awareness programs for pre-school and primary aged children and delivers accredited courses for individuals seeking to become qualified dog trainers.

During that time, they have seen the real difference their visits make to patients. Fiona, a registered nurse, says that Ruby’s visits are a welcome distraction for patients, many of whom have dementia.

Delta relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to provide its life-changing services.

“We simply could not have continued for 20 years without our donors and the tireless work of Delta’s volunteers and accredited trainers. I sincerely thank everyone who has shared their energy, time and commitment with Delta over the years,” Ms James said.

THE Food Truck Festival is heading to Mernda for a brand new five-day event this week.
Featuring some of Melbourne’s best food trucks, craft beer bar, entertainment and artist markets, the Food Truck Festival will begin this Wednesday, November 15 and run until Sunday, November 19.

Part of the Australian Mobile Food Vendors Group’s (AMFVG) 12 month festival event calendar, the Mernda Food Truck Festival will boast a large line-up with nearly 50 operators on rotation.

The food truck line-up includes Boss Burger and Shake, Blondies Doughnuts, Big Smoke BBQ, Caliko BBQ, Cheese and Bread, Curry Up Now, Greek Trojan Food Truck, Happy Gelati, The Hungry Panda, The Rib Crib, Sultans of Gozleme, Taco Junction, Two Fat Indians and many more.

The Food Truck Park directors, Frank Rusitovski and Dean Trepski, are thrilled to take the event on the road.

“The food truck culture is a huge part of this city, and now we want to share the love of street food in new neighbourhood craving cultural events,” Mr Rusitovski said.

The Food Truck Festival Mernda will be held at Mernda Recreational Reserve from November 15 to 19, entry via Shotters Road (off Plenty Road).

THE Gisborne Singers are ending 2017 with a choral work which celebrates the beginning of the world.

Haydn’s Creation, is a musical masterpiece which tell the story from the biblical perspective, particularly the book of Genesis.

The dramatic three part work is a life affirming celebration which deservedly has formed an important part of the world’s choral repertoire since it was first performed. The music is dynamic and emotional while the text is as powerful and relevant as it was over 300 years ago.

This Gisborne Singers have been performing the world’s great choral works for nearly 30 years. Music Director Stephen Brockman will conduct the choir of 50 singers. 2017 has been a busy year for the choir who began the year with their first international tour which included a performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

The work will be performed in English and will be accompanied by a full orchestra with some of their favourite soloists; soprano, Cristina Russo, tenor, Christopher Roache and bass, Manfred Pohlenz.

When Creation premiered at a small private performance in 1799, police had to hold back the hundreds of people who were trying to get in to hear the work.

There will be two performances, November 19 at Our Lady of the Rosary, Kyneton and November 26 at Church of Christ, New Gisborne. For bookings visit the choir’s website,

THE Sunday Creek Dry Creek Landcare is holding a birds of prey event in Clonbinane to enable locals to get to know these amazing creatures of the air.

Those attending will learn how an owl can catch prey even in complete darkness and how a kestrel uses it’s ‘superpowers’ to locate prey. In addition, there will be information on how to help to protect these unique birds of prey in their habitat.

The Presentation by Martin Scuffins from Leigh Valley Hawk and Owl Sanctuary commences at 12.30pm until 1.30pm on November 18 at Clonbinane Community Hall in Waterford Park.

Birds of prey are perfectly adapted to the natural world they share with us. Come and meet a variety of birds from the Leigh Valley Hawk and Owl Sanctuary as these flying predators showcase their agility and superb adaptions during this personal encounter.

THE Warrnambool-trained Dodging Bullets took out an exciting $100,000 bet365 Kyneton Cup last Wednesday witnessed by a big crowd.

Trained by Symon Wilde, and well ridden by Daniel Moor, the $2.80 favourite grabbed the $4.20 second elect, Moonovermanhattan, on the line with the unlucky Grand Dreamer ($5) third.

It was back-to-back wins for the ultra-consistent six-year-old gelded son of Dash For Cash and Young Love who was an impressive winner at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate eve.

“The hard track and with them slowing the pace mid-race, I don’t think it suited him but he was too good on the day,” Wilde said.
“Maybe a race like the Ballarat Cup (November 25) might be ideal for him.
“He was a $50,000 horse at the Melbourne Premier sale and he is repaying his owners now, that is for sure,” he said.

Dodging Bullets has now won six races with 10 minor placings, earning $422,200 in prizemoney.

THE Mill Street Mall in Kilmore is to receive a town clock – thanks to funding from the Stronger Communities Program and the Southern Mitchell Rotary Club.

Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, announced the success of the Southern Mitchell Rotary Club in receiving funding of $8000 through the Stronger Communities Program.

“This funding, matched by in-kind donations and funds raised by local Rotary, will see the addition of a new town landmark, the Kilmore community town clock,” Mr Mitchell said.
“It’s fantastic to see groups such as Southern Mitchell Rotary committed to establishing new history for Kilmore in a way that adds to the town square feel of the Mall.
“By working cohesively with Mitchell Shire Council and other local groups such as the Kilmore Men’s Shed, this walkway through to the new creek precinct is a wonderful collaborative effort, which will be topped off by the clock tower,” Mr Mitchell added.

Mr Mitchell’s office has recommended grants totalling $150,000 a year over three years to support community projects. Local organisations applied for grants from $5000 to $20,000 on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

The aim of the SCP is to fund small capital projects, which deliver social benefits.
“The Stronger Communities Program allows MP’s like myself to work directly with local communities to identify eligible projects and invite applicants to apply,” Mr Mitchell said.

New mayor for Whittlesea

SOUTH West Ward’s Cr Kris Pavlidis has been elected as the new City of Whittlesea Mayor, with Whittlesea’s youngest-ever councillor Emilia Lisa Sterjova elected as deputy mayor.

Both councillors were elected on Thursday night, November 2 at a special council meeting ahead of fellow councillor Caz Monteleone.

Cr Pavlidis has served as a councillor for the last four terms and this will be her second stint as mayor, having held the top position 10 years ago.
Cr Sam Alessi nominated Cr Pavlidis to the role, citing her passion, strong leadership skills and strong social commitment.

“Cr Pavlidis is an experienced an energetic councillor having represented Whittlesea residents for many years. She is also a passionate community advocate for social justice and cultural diversity,” Cr Alessi said in his nomination.

Cr Pavlidis said it was an honour to be elected mayor for the next 12 months and said she looks forward to serving with a high standard of integrity, transparency and accountability.

“These are exciting, new and changing times for us here in the City of Whittlesea and I am grateful to have the privilege to lead a strong, skilled and committed team, moving forward with a firm direction and a clear vision of where we are heading,” Cr Pavlidis said.

In her mayoral speech, Cr Pavlidis said it was vital for council to strengthen partnerships with local MPs to deliver key projects, such as advancing Edgars Road connectivity and the duplication of Plenty Road to Bridge Inn Road. She also encouraged her fellow councillors to listen to their community.

“With unwavering determination we are committed to continuing our strong advocacy to address these issues in close collaboration and partnerships with our local MPs,” Cr Pavlidis continued.
“As the sphere of government closest to the people, local government has a real opportunity to develop its vision and strategic direction in a close collaborative relationship with its local residents.”

With more than 131 people moving into the municipality each week, Cr Pavlidis also said that council needs to be better prepared and wiser in its planning approach, and avoid impediment on resident’s amenity, safety and the City’s liveability.

Elected into council in November 2016, North Ward Cr Emilia Lisa Sterjova said she was honoured to be elected the youngest deputy mayor in the history of the City of Whittlesea and looks forward to establishing a youth council.

“I’m truly honoured and humbled to be elected the youngest deputy mayor in the Victoria and the City of Whittlesea,” Cr Sterjova told the Whittlesea Review.
“I would like to congratulate Cr Kris Pavlidis on being elected our new mayor. I look forward to working alongside her and the other councillors to make our city the best it can be.

“In the next year I hope to establish a youth council and inspire other young people in our area to have a voice on all matters relating to local government.”

Local Member for Yan Yean Danielle Green was in attendance at the special council meeting and said it was a “privilege to witness history in the making at the City of Whittlesea with two women in the roles of mayor and deputy mayor”.

“They’re (Cr Pavlidis and Cr Sterjova) the perfect blend of knowledge, experience and youthful enthusiasm and I’m sure they’ll lead the City very well.
“I very much welcome the new mayor’s focus on local jobs because this has been something that has been missing for some years in the City of Whittlesea.”
