WORKS have started on a new dog-friendly space at Chittick Park in Seymour, creating a safe, purpose-built environment for local dog owners to exercise, train and socialise their four-legged friends.
Located behind the Seymour Tennis Complex, the Chittick Park Dog Friendly Space is supported by $166,500 from the Victorian Government’s New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program and a $66,500 contribution from Council.
The facility is a key action from the Chittick Park Masterplan, endorsed in 2024 following extensive community consultation. It also supports Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026 – 2029 and responds to the on-leash order that came into effect in July, which will increase demand for dedicated fenced off-leash areas.
The works will deliver a fully fenced main area and a shy dog zone, secure double gates to external entrances, tree planting for shade, cooling and habitat, rocks, logs and planting for sensory experience, space breakers, marking and physical challenge, a digging pit, a variety of surfaces and textures for dog training and familiarisation, seating for all abilities and space for balls and fetch
Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor John Dougall said the project was an important milestone for Seymour.
“It’s great to see work underway on a facility that is very important to our community,” he said.
“The Chittick Park Masterplan made clear that a fenced dog off-leash area was a high priority. We’ve listened and are now delivering on that commitment.
“This is about creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for local pet owners, and I want to thank the Victorian Government for their support in helping bring this important project to life.”
Construction of the facility is expected to be completed by October 2026.
