Meeting again

Who’s for the Kilmore Mechanics’ Institute?

After a period of inactivity, a special general meeting has been called for Wednesday, April 22, at 2pm in the Kilmore Court House, 4 Powlett Street.

Established in 1854, the canny founders of the KMI have left an enduring legacy for Kilmore and its citizens.

Over the years the KMI has been a mirror for its people, with an ongoing vision for Kilmore reflecting the whole of spectrum of: agriculture, business, education, entertainment, equestrian, health, history and heritage, industry, tourism and hospitality, and transport.

In recent years its George Hudson Awards paid cash for good ideas which went to both youth and seniors.

If you have some idea for the betterment of Kilmore, please come along on April 22 and help ‘feed the flame’, the slogan of the worldwide Mechanics’ Institute Movement.

Trying to make sense

Have you ever wondered what an oxymoron is?

Well, here is a good example. We have been informed that the Federal Government is spending about $20 million on advertising to persuade the public not to travel far and wide that is not necessary to do so, using fuel that our farming industry and transport industry need to put food on our tables.

Which is important at this time due to the uncertainty of world events.
And yet advertisers are encouraging the public to travel far and wide to festivals this month promoting whatever they grow and celebrate in their region.

Places in regional Victoria such as Ballarat, Bright, Macedon, Wandiligong, Jamieson, Yarrawonga and Benalla. And these are just some. Is this an oxymoron or am I missing something?

Lort Smith celebrates

During a cost-of-living crisis, pets remain an essential source of love, comfort and stability especially for those experiencing hardship. Yet it is at these moments that people are most at risk of losing them.

Lort Smith Animal Hospital is more than a veterinary clinic. We exist to ensure pets receive the care they need and can remain with the people who love them.

This month, we mark 90 years since opening our doors. While much has changed since 1936, when our founder, Louisa Lort Smith, established the hospital during the Great Depression, our purpose, to care for the animals of people with limited means, remains unchanged.

Unlike most human health and welfare services, we receive no direct government funding. We rely on the generosity of individuals who understand the importance of the human-animal bond.

We thank all those, throughout Victoria, who have contributed to our legacy over the past 90 years and remain committed to supporting people and their pets through life’s most difficult moments.

Remembering the fallen

As Anzac Day approaches, we take time to honour the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our nation.

Across our region, communities will gather at dawn services and memorials, standing together in quiet respect. These moments matter. They remind us of the cost of service and the responsibility we all carry to remember it.

Throughout our region, service runs through generations. For many families, Anzac Day is deeply personal. It lives in family stories, in photographs on the mantelpiece, and in the names etched on our local cenotaphs.

I am always struck by the strength of our veteran community. Not only in what they have given, but in the way they continue to support one another and contribute to our towns.

Anzac Day is a time to stand with them and to acknowledge the values they represent. Courage, resilience and mateship.

We will remember them.

Lest we forget.
