WORKS have begun on a major streetscape upgrade in Thomastown, with the Boulevard Town Centre Revitalisation Project officially breaking ground this month.

The project has been backed by a $2.8 million investment from the Federal Government under the Thriving Suburbs Program, which supports capital works aimed at improving liveability, strengthening social cohesion and enhancing local amenity in urban and suburban communities.

Federal Member for Scullin Andrew Giles said the redevelopment would deliver a safer, more attractive and climate-resilient town centre for residents, businesses and visitors.

“It’s so important growing suburbs like Thomastown are supported with attractive social spaces for residents to not just live in, but to thrive,” Mr Giles said.

Delivered by the City of Whittlesea, the project will include new social spaces, increased canopy tree planting to reduce urban heat, raised pedestrian crossing, new gardens, upgraded street lighting and improved front-of-shop parking.

The works will also address gaps in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, improving walking access to local shops and creating a new shared path connection to Thomastown train station.

Whittlesea Mayor Lawrie Cox said the revitalisation would transform an outdated and under-utilised space into a vibrant and welcoming destination.

“The money invested in this project will boost economic activity in the area by helping to attract new businesses and new customers.

“Council is contributing about $1.3 million towards the project, with the Australian Government’s Thriving Suburb Program contributing $2.8 million and the Transport Accident Commission a further $100,000.”

The upgrade is expected to be completed by April 2027.
