KILMORE Bowling Club hosted the Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region Division three semi finals on Saturday and also the preliminaries on Sunday.

Romsey played Gisborne while Mt Cottrell played Kyneton for a chance to compete in the preliminary finals on Sunday.

Club Secretary Lesley Hodges said: “The green is running at 14.5, and all the players are happy, and the weather is looking good.”

On a humid day, Romsey would go on to make the top score, 55-44 and Mt Cottrell won the day against Kyneton, 59-56.

Romsey earnt the ticket straight into the grand final while Kyneton ‘s season ended.

On Sunday, in contrast to Saturday, an hour into the game the weather changed beginning with a spatter of rain that soon required players to wear their wet weather gear for its duration.

Mt Cottrell and Gisborne players polished their bowls quickly and made haste to win their ends.

Going into lunch, with 35 ends played, Mt Cottrell led the way by 17 shots, 45 to Gisborne 28.

The games were close and the spectators were treated to highlights including an 8 and a six Mt Cottrell’s way on John Peter Dunns rink.

At what seemed like the games end, umpire Lesley Hodges was called upon to decide the results of Liam Glascott’s (Mt Cottrell) and John Hunter (Gisborne’s) final end.

After careful measurements it was announced that all teams would return to the green for another end each to determine the winner, and the thrilling results saw Mt Cottrell victorious over Gisborne by four shots, 69 to 65.

Meantime, Kilmore’s division one team played at Trentham Bowling Club against Kyneton Golf, and they returned home with a mighty win, 67-56 thanks to skip Ben Carroll leading the way,  31-12. Rinks two and three finished with a win Kyneton’s way, 22-15, and 22-21, respectively.

The following day the Blues played Kyneton and were defeated 61-46 bringing their exciting season to a close.

The Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region pennant series grand finals will be held at Trentham bowling club, 3 Park St, Trentham on Sunday March 8.

Romsey plays Kyneton in Div 1, and in Div 2, Kyneton plays Kyneton Golf, while in Div 3, Romsey play Mt Cottrell.
