AFTER more than 20 years at the heart of Wallan, Wellington Square is preparing for a major transformation, and this time the future design will be shaped not just by developers, but by the people who use it every day.

The shopping centre has launched an exclusive Community Panel, inviting local residents to play a hands-on role in planning the redevelopment. Organisers say the initiative goes beyond the usual consultation process, offering residents the chance to directly influence the mix of shops, services, and community spaces.

“This isn’t just consultation, it’s collaboration. We want the people who shop, eat, and connect at Wellington Square to help us create something truly special for Wallan’s future,” a Wellington Square spokesperson said.

For many residents, the redevelopment offers an opportunity to dream bigger about what their town centre could become.

One idea could be a push for additional family-friendly spaces, somewhere to sit with the kids after shopping, maybe with a bit of play equipment or a community garden.

The panel will meet across three evening sessions in September and October, working side-by-side with the development team. Their ideas could shape everything from the retail mix to the design of gathering spaces, ensuring the new Wellington Square reflects the needs and aspirations of the community.

To recognise their time and input, participants will receive a $300 honorarium for completing all three sessions, with dinner provided at each meeting.

Sessions will be held locally, with details shared once the panel is selected. Applications are open now, with Expressions of Interest closing on August 29 and successful applicants notified in early September.

For many residents the chance to have a say is an exciting opportunity. Wellington Square has been the place where people bump into each other, many seeing it as the heart of the town.

Wellington Square’s redevelopment is seen as a significant investment in the town’s future. By inviting residents to co-design the project, organisers hope the result will be a revitalised centre that not only caters to shopping needs but also creates spaces where people want to spend time.

As the centre’s campaign puts it: “Because the best communities are built together.”

Applications close on August 29. Residents interested in joining the Community Panel can apply at wellingtonsquare.com.au/whats-on.
