THE State Government has announced that its $964 million 2024/25 road maintenance program is wrapping up this month, raising concerns among some cynical locals that roads will go unmaintained until this time next year.
The Government claims that “hundreds of kilometres” of roads have been repaired, resurfaced or rebuilt to keep Victorians moving delivering more reliable journeys for local drivers, tourists, and freight operators.
According to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, crews have inspected roads and responded to calls from local communities.
“Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, undertaking repairs on more than 211,000 potholes and mowing and slashing more than 50,000 kilometres of grass,” Ms Horne said.
She added that approximately 70 per cent of this program was delivered on roads and roadsides across regional Victoria, with major works delivered along the Great Alpine Road, the Mallee Highway, the Monaro Highway, the Surf Coast Highway and the Western Highway with no mention of roads in North Central Victoria.
Local motorists are living in hope that the 2025/26 Better Roads Blitz, scheduled to commence later this year will find some time and money for roads in this region.
