AN upgrade is in the works for the Seymour Football Netball Club if the Coalition is elected in next month’s election, with the promise of $500,000 to be provided for works on Kings Park.

The goal of the upgrade, as part of a Dutton-Littleproud Government, would be to cater for future growth in participation numbers in Australian football and the improvement of facilities for major events.

The upgrade would be completed on Kings Park’s back oval.

Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, says the funding would be completed thanks to $150,000 provided by Mitchell Shire Council (MSC).

“This funding will upgrade the second oval at Kings Park and install AFL standard lighting which will provide a significantly improved facility for junior football,” he said.

“Kings Park is a great facility which hosts many user groups and major events such as the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo and Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Show. This major upgrade will benefit all user groups.”

Draining works would also be performed as part of the upgrade.

Mr Birrell added his thoughts on growing the participation levels in Seymour.

“Hopefully after the period of COVID where we had kids locked down and forced to be at home, on the couch and not playing sport, and we’re seeing what we’re seeing, but also Seymour and the Seymour Junior Football Club has a great culture and it’s a place where families feel really comfortable bringing their kids to participate,” he said.

“The funding we’ll put towards this will see more kids out there playing, enjoying each other’s company, not necessarily on their devices, but playing more footy or more netball.”

MSC Mayor Councillor John Dougall also added his commitment to help shows how much it means to the Seymour community.

“Mitchell Shire absolutely welcomes the commitment here, should [Liberal] form government. What you want to know is that this means something to the community, and that’s why Mitchell Shire is more than happy to contribute to the overall outcome, so $150,000 from us, [in addition to] half a million dollars,” he said.

“We have to demonstrate [this means something to the community] by putting in council money, and we’re very happy to do that, because we know this will have an impact on the community.”
