The past few weeks have been a busy time for the Zonta Club of Mitchell, as they actively engage in the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
As part of their engagement, trees in Wallan, Kilmore, and Seymour have been illuminated with orange yarn, an activity commonly known as yarn bombing.
Members from across the shire jumped on board with the initiative, knitting and crocheting squares and shapes to be crafted with the blankets.
The blankets were then draped over trees across the Mitchell Shire, each accompanied by a tag featuring a QR code, which allows residents to learn about the club’s work as well as access important resources.
Zonta Club of Mitchell President Robin Audehm emphasised the importance of associating the colour orange with the campaign, which served as a powerful reminder that support is available for those in need.
“It’s to raise awareness of the problem of domestic violence, and also for support and hope for victim survivors, so recognising that it’s an issue, but giving support,” she said.
“It’s absolutely essential that people realise that there is support, that it’s an issue that needs to be talked about and not hidden away.”
The woollen blankets will be collected and recycled after December 10.
In addition to yarn bombing for the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which officially started on November 25, Zonta has also had their orange-dressed ladies out and about in front of businesses.
The not-for-profit organisation was also busy in late November with their annual Art and Christmas Market at Gavan Hall in Broadford, which marked the start of the club’s participation in the campaign.
The yarn bombed trees in Wallan will feature in Mitchell Shire Council’s annual Step Towards Change walk on December 5 in Wallan’s Hadfield Park, and all are invited to attend.
