Opening night at the Seymour Performers Workshop’s latest production was a hit, and the preshow entertainment sublime.
Audiences who arrived early to see Dogfight last Saturday night enjoyed a free lounge show featuring some of the cast members.
Kevin Pinto, who starred as Gibbs the marine and the lounge singer performed a cover of I did it my way by Frank Sinatra.
Next, 16-year-old vocalist Edith Marchant crooned Dream a little dream of me along with her plucky semi-acoustic guitar. Georgina Ulrich was next, and she performed a cover of Georgy girl by The Seekers.
The Seymour Community Arts Centre has modern facilities, yet the stage was set for the swinging sixties and the conflict marines faced during the time when their purpose, it seems, was to serve their country and have fun at cost.
Laura Hogan played leading lady Rose Fenny, who blossoms into womanhood over the course of the show, and her musical numbers were powerful, especially when sang as a duet with her on stage partner Eddie Birdlace, played by Charlie Mustoe. Their song First date was one that touched the heart strings, and the band of six really brought it home.
A strong supporting cast delivered a host of hilarious moments, and yet there were also many emotional scenes to witness, such as the moment Marcy, played by Charli Lewis, explains the rules of the dogfight.
There is still time to see Dogfight as a matinee this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm–4.30pm while the final evening show will be played on Saturday from 7.30pm–10pm. Tickets are just $35 and snacks and drinks are affordably priced.
Attendees are asked to arrive 30 minutes early to catch the pre-show entertainment.
