At the weekend, the Gisborne and District Cricket season commenced with one-day matches in mostly sunny conditions, however some matches were abandoned due to rain.

For a one-day match at the Kilmore cricket pitch, the Kilmore Johnston Shield Firsts team hosted Aintree Cricket Club, who travelled nearly 90km from the west.

The game’s opening batter was Aintree’s Captain Vinay Kumar Sharma. Kilmore Captain Joshua Buttler bowled the first bowl of the round, then three more before Sharma was caught by fielder Marcus Davern, and he went out for a duck.

The next Aintree batter Charandeep Kalsi made 41 runs and was declared not out when heavy rain caused the game to be abandoned, and was assisted by Gurbeer Singh who made 30 runs.

Vasudevan Bharathway made five runs in between, before being caught by Andrew Smith with Buttler bowling early in the fifth over. The game was abandoned at the end of the 20th over, and they lost only two wickets for 87 runs.

The clouds were not so heavy at Greenhill Reserve’s cricket pitch where Eastern Hills travelled to and played against Wallan.

Winning the toss, Eastern Hills elected their first batter Brayden Speechley, and he made four runs before he was caught out by Spencer Whittingham’s first bowl of the sixth over.

Captain Seamus Feery made 27 runs before he was run out by a jubilant Hamish Mullavey-Clark, assisted by Spencer Whittingham in the 24th over.

Matthew Collard made 71 big runs before Joshua Mullavey-Clark saw him out for a leg before wicket (LBW) on the first ball of the 40th over.

Eastern Hills finished their batting with Rory Kennedy and Daniel O’Sullivan on the pitch and three batters remaining, a final score of six players out for 188 runs.

Wallan’s innings began with Matthew Clayton, and he faced nine balls before he was bowled out by Tim Rudd-Schmidt, but he got two runs in.

Zac Bell faced seven balls and was bowled out by a duck in the 30th over.

Ryan Cumberland faced 58 balls and made 63 big runs until he was bowled out by Collard near the end of the 34th over.

Wallan finished with Mullavey-Clark and Campbell Fowler still on the pitch and just one batter remaining.

The match finished in Wallan’s favour, eight for 191 runs after 39.3 overs.

The Broadford Cricket Club travelled to play Sunbury United in the McIntyre Cup Seconds.

Broadford won the toss and Connor Stute was the first to bat, and he went on to face 59 balls and make an impressive 77 runs before being bowled out mid-way through the 22nd over by Sunbury’s Jack Dillon.

Broadford’s Sikander Sharma faced 19 balls and made 24 runs before being caught out by Steven Fogarty early in the 30th over.

Braden Hickey faced 43 balls for 38 runs before being caught out by Fogarty early in the 43rd over.

Broadford finished with Jeremy Bradshaw and James Jones still on the pitch and one batter, Captain Jack Connell waiting in the wings.
