The Mitchell Shire Youth Council is officially locked in for 2024/25, comprising of young people from across the Shire with a range of passions and interests.

Mitchell Youth Council is a leadership program for young people aged 12-24 to have their voices heard on issues that impact them and advocate for all young people in the Shire.

The new Youth Council was sworn in at an official ceremony at Council Chambers in Broadford last month, with 13 youth taking on different positions; their portfolios representing a wide range of topics such as mental health, gender equity, inclusion, active and healthy living, environment, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual (LGBTQIA+) matters.

This year’s Mitchell Youth councillors include Youth Council Mayor Bailey White, Youth Council Deputy Mayor Catherine Jacob, Youth Council Secretary Cena Marshall, and Senior Youth Councillor Nic Houghton.

Other councillors taking on different portfolios and wards include Elena Skala, Ella Childs, Jeremy Shute, Phoebie McDonald, Zali Patford, Evie Birks, Heidi Banks, Taylah Macdonald, and Jess Stevens.

Mitchell Shire Acting Mayor Councillor Nathan Clark said he looked forward to partnering with the youth to help improve the quality-of-life for Mitchell’s younger residents.

“As senior councillors, the perspectives we receive regarding the amenities and services desired by Mitchell Shire’s youth are incredibly insightful,” he said.

“I wholeheartedly thank these emerging leaders for their initiative and dedication to improving their communities.

“Such opportunities often pave the way for continued involvement in various leadership roles within the community, and it would be truly inspiring to see some of these young leaders eventually become senior councillors.”
