Professor Prahlad Ho has commenced in the role of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Northern Health after Professor Wanda Stelmach stepped down following a successful tenure.
Professor Ho’s career began as an intern, progressing through basic and advancing training at Northern Health and Austin Health, with an academic background which includes a Bachelor of Medical Science and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (Honours) from the University of Melbourne.
In 2014, Professor Ho was appointed to the role of Laboratory and Clinical Haematologist, and has since held multiple leadership positions.
A Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Professor Ho earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne in 2018.
He also holds an Adjunct Professorship from RMIT University, and honorary appointments at the University of Melbourne and Monash University.
Professor Ho said he had the privilege of serving in every medical position in the hospital, from medical student to consultant, and is honoured to now be serving as CMO.
“I still recall when I first came here as a medical student, I had to avoid kangaroos to get into the building. How much has the Northern Hospital Epping changed since then,” he said.
“During my time here, I have seen us develop from a small, outer suburban community hospital into a major hospital. I strongly believe that Northern Health is the best place to work, and a place where we can make a difference.
“I intend to continue to deliver this and work together to transform our hospital into a tertiary centre of excellence, which we and our patients can all be proud of.”
Outgoing Professor Stelmach has worked across both PANCH and Northern Health for over 30 years, and will now begin to transition into retirement.
“My wide portfolio has been challenging and interesting. I have enjoyed the challenges because of the staff, patients, families, and communities I interact with,” she said.
“I will miss the breadth of interactions, however, I will continue my work as a Divisional Director of Cancer Services and as Medical Director of North Eastern Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service, as well as continue teaching medical students and co-supporting my RMIT research students.”
