Whittlesea Historical Society (WHS) members, including two guests from neighbouring societies, had an eventful day out in Melbourne earlier this month, attending several morning workshops at the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV).
Seven WHS members made use of the training, starting the day with a presentation from RHSV Collections Manager Jillian Hiscock, who spoke about the processes involved in the management of a collection, from acquisition to storage.
The presentation was of great value to the WHS in the management of their own collection, which had also mentioned the assistance available through grants and fundraising.
The members then moved on to hearing from Collections Officer Helen Stitt who spoke about digitising collectable items, and stated that doing so allowed items to be preserved and shared more easily.
After an informative morning of workshops, participants then moved to the central CBD to The Banks on Collins – a restaurant that is housed in a historic building on the corner of Collins and Queen Street.
Afterwards, participants walked across the road to view the impressive Gothic Bank, which has recently been converted into a banking museum.
WHS thanked the Whittlesea Bowls Club and the RHSV for their assistance in making the training day possible, and looks forward to further collaboration on other projects.
