Saturday was the fourth of eight matches this season where Whittlesea has produced a winning margin of under 15 points.

From the start it was clear that Diamond Creek meant business with a goal at the one and a half minute mark. The Eagles were quick to respond but a mix or pressure and accuracy saw two minor scores posted on the scoreboard.

The close of the first quarter saw Diamond Creek ahead on the scoreboard 30 points to 21, having scored five goals to Whittlesea’s three.

The second quarter was a more balanced affair with both sides booting four majors. The trend continued up to the main break with Diamond Creek producing textbook football to lead by six points at half time.

But the Eagles were not done. A dynamic third quarter saw Whittlesea close the third term with a six point lead.

Only three goals were kicked in the fourth term and the dominance of behinds on the scoreboard highlighted the pressure of the Game that lead to Whittlesea’s 12.15 (87) to 11.6 (72) victory.

Saturday’s triumph was Whittlesea’s seventh consecutive win over Diamond Creek over the past 10 years.

Goals for Whittlesea came from Jack Taylor and Harry Beatie with two each.Taidhg Bland, Max Dyson, Kane Johnson, Riley Powell Harvey Hempenstall, Jack Morely and Lachlan Shinn-mahoney contributed with one each.

Best on ground were Matthew Atta, Taidhg Bland, Lachlan Shinn-Mahony, Lucas Hobbs, Riley Carter and Deakin Tennant. Key players including Xavier Dimasi, Blake Watson, and Mitchell Andrews were missing from the side.

Laurimar dominated the second term, keeping St Mary’s scoreless, leading into an action packed second half in which both sides trading shots at goal with accuracy costing both teams a significant margin.

At three quarter time it looked like Laurimar had the game in the bag with a comfortable 18 point margin. St Mary’s however was not spent and put on the pressure to see the final score – Laurimar 10.10 (70) losing to St Mary’s 10.11 (71).
