Wallan Panthers women bounced back in round nine of the Big V competition at the weekend.

After last week’s loss against Melbourne, the Panthers entered Saturday night’s game with its game plan to defend more in all four quarters – a foundational component the side had been focusing on for weeks in the lead up to their matches.

Once play went underway, the Panthers achieved its goal, making huge improvements in defence however the RMIT Redbacks returned similar efforts in taking advantage of the Panther’s missed shots and defending the ball.

By halftime RMIT Redbacks was up by one point and remained the same by the end of the third quarter – which meant Wallan needed to show a full performance in the final quarter to secure the win.

The Panthers indeed showed a full effort performance in the final quarter, pulling out all the right steps to get on top including several lay-ups with their improved defence to claim victory.

The final score saw a 63-58 victory at Wallan’s home ground.

Coach Jarrod Bridge said the team showed improvement in its defence at the weekend.

“Felt great to get another win in the positive column, our team defence was greatly improved with more effort across the board from the players,” he said.

“Team rebounding was fantastic, which we made a conscious effort to ensure we won that contest.

“Kylah Collins had a great game on both ends of the court showing her MVP level of playing, as well as great input from the side’s veterans including Molly Young and Krystle Jewell.”

Heading into the next round, Wallan will host Warrandyte on Saturday.

Wallan Panthers’ division two men had a bye in round nine but will return this Saturday to take on neighbouring team Craigieburn.

Round nine will be a redemption match for Wallan Panthers’ men, following its loss against the side in round six.
