Tomoya’s pit stop in Kilmore

TOMOYA Matsusaka arrived in Kilmore on Tuesday, December 16 on route from Cairns to Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne to raise funds for children in need.

As a solo pedestrian with an aluminium cart packed with the barest of essentials, Mr Matsusaka took his first steps late in Autumn on Tuesday, May 27 on the Bruce Highway to raise funds for children in need.

The fundraising goal, $60K is within reach as with days to go, generous Australianโ€™s have donated 95 per cent of its target already.

Tomoya Matsusaka on his Gofundme page wrote: โ€œI have been able to walk to this day is not because of my own strength, but because of the support of many people”.

One of those people is a Euroa publican.

Mitul Ahir responded to a call for help from Tomoya Matsusaka after he incurred a tyre puncture on the Hume Highway between Seymour and Broadford yesterday.

Mr Ahir arranged to drive him to Kilmore and phoned ahead to ask Wheel House Bikes if they could help free of charge.

Proprietor Rob Jackson said: โ€œI gave him my number and said look if you have any more troubles give me a buzzโ€.

โ€œLiterally that afternoon we got a call from him and he said he got another puncture and he was at the servo across from Hudsons Park. So, we came back here grabbed another tube and another spare tube and replaced another one for him,โ€ he said.

Mel Sveticic said: โ€œI called Ah Raffaele and asked Kitty if she could give him some breaky that I could post pay for later and some lunch for on his way homeโ€.

Mr Matsusaka told the Review that he was born in Japan as he posed for a picture as he leaving Kilmore around 10am this morning.

On his Gofundme page, he said: โ€œTraveling by foot has taught me the importance of having food and drink โ€ฆ I originally worked in education, and I love childrenโ€.

โ€œIn Australia, the distances between towns are long, so it’s difficult to secure food and water. I travel on foot, so the distance I cover each day is short, and I drink a lot of water, so it runs out quickly. But the people living in Australia are really kind and give me lots of food and drinks.โ€

The finish line is days away, Saturday, December 20 when Mr Matsusaka plans to arrive at The Conservatory Fitzroy Gardens at 5pm.

โ€œI want as many children as possible to have food and drink and live today, so I want to donate to UNICEF Australia,โ€ he said.

$2.56b precinct for region

THE first stage of the $2.565 billion Beveridge Intermodal Precinct is ready to be freighted in for a mid-2028 start, with its design and construction announced to a bevy of assembled key stakeholders, council groups and government figures on Thursday morning.

John Holland has been announced as the company behind the first stage to deliver Melbourneโ€™s first terminal to receive and service double-stacked Inland Rail trains.

John Holland CEO Nick Miller said people can have confidence in the completion of the project.

โ€œHaving previously partnered withโ€ฏNational Intermodal and the Australian Government in the delivery of the Moorebank Intermodal Terminalโ€ฏweโ€™reโ€ฏproud to be working together again to deliver this critical project at Beveridge,โ€ he said.

The announcement was made by National Intermodal CEO James Baulderstone, in conjunction with Federal Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King on Thursday as a sod turn was completed for the first stage of the project, which has been fully funded by the Federal Government.

The event had strong government representation, with Ms King joined by Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell and Victorian Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne, while Mitchell Shire CEO Mary Agostino and Mayor Councillor John Dougall, as well as City of Whittlesea CEO Craig Lloyd and Mayor Councillor Lawrie Cox, also made an appearance to help mark the sod turn.

The National Intermodal Precinct is designed to help move freight from road to rail and is slated to remove 167,000 truck trips every year, which is formulated to reduce emissions by 12.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over 25 years.

About 70 per cent of more than 17,000 estimated jobs are earmarked for locals in the Mitchell Shire and City of Whittlesea areas, while 500 hectares of land will be preserved for the green wedge and long-term environmental purposes.

Ms King said it was a historic moment for Beveridge.

โ€œAs we work to move more freight from our roads to rail, Beveridge will play a key role in marshalling freight from the port and across Victoria, sending it onto destinations across the country via our rail network,โ€ she said.

โ€œStrong local supply chains often go unnoticed, but they are vital to ensure goods make it to shelves and shopfronts. With site preparation works now starting, the freight hub here at Beveridge will play a key role in our supply chain, while supporting local jobs and boosting our nationโ€™s economy.โ€

Mr Baulderstone said: โ€œThe Beveridge Intermodal Precinct is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape how freight moves across Australiaโ€.

โ€œWeโ€™re ready to deliver a nationally significant project that will not only drive $14 billion in economic uplift in Victoria and create over 17,000 jobs, but also deliver real environmental benefits.โ€

Mr Mitchell said it was a project which will support the prospect of local jobs.

โ€œThe Beveridge Intermodal Precinct is a critical part of Australiaโ€™s future freight network, and todayโ€™s announcement brings us one step closer to making it a reality,โ€ he said.
