TALLAROOK Plateau is coming together for the Victorian Rogaining Championships to be held in late September, as part of the 50th anniversary of the sport held in its roots in the town.

Rogaining, which is a cross-country navigation event for teams using a map and a compass, began in Tallarook in 1976. The sport has since spread across Australia, and then to over 30 countries, culminating in the 20th edition of the World Rogaining Championships being held in September next year in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.

The Victorian Rogaining Association typically runs a six-, 12-and 24-hour rogaine, with 200 to 400 participants regularly turning out.

A progress report has been sent through for the Victorian Rogaining Championships, with numerous landowners generously offering their land.

Courses are starting to be set by course setters Alaster Meehan and Paul Monks, who were the 2025 Victorian Rogaining champions, which will include 60-80 controls on private and public land, which will also provide options for competitors of all skill levels.

The controls are marked by tape, then independently checked for location, before electronic markers are placed, used during the event and collected soon after.

Later on, base camp will be setup for the final week of September with tents, catering facilities and the start/finish arrangements organised.
