BROADFORD returned to Harley Hammond Reserve for its Round 3 fixtures against Golden Square on Saturday, but couldn’t secure the win it’s been searching for this season.
In cold but sunny conditions, the flavour of the day was netball with A-grade sharpshooter Renee Sari notching up 100 games for the club.
Coming up against a significantly taller Golden Square side, it was Sari who led the charge early with the first goal of the game, and she continued to provide scoring throughout the first quarter in a high-scoring start.
Dogged defensive efforts from Shayla White proved the Kangaroos were up for the fight, but turnovers in the defensive third were costly and prevented the team from matching it with the more clinical Golden Square side.
The height of the Bulldogs proved too much, pulling away in the second half to win 72-35 to hand Broadford its third loss of the season.
News was no better in the B-grade matchup, with Golden Square taking the win 61-26, or the B-reserve who fell to a 43-goal defeat. The 17-and-under team went down 83-8 to a very strong outfit.
In the senior football, the Kangaroos had their work cut out for them against a Bulldogs side also searching for its first win of the season.
Recruits Louis Thompson and Jaiden Magor found the ball early, while it seemed there was a whole team directive to ensure the opposition players were under pressure every time they touched it.
But it wasn’t enough to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard, booting the first four goals of the game before the VFL-listed Magor kicked a nice set shot from the pocket to get Broadford on the scoresheet.

A ten goal barrage from the visitors in the second quarter was met with a solitary goal from the home side as the deficit blew out to 86 at half time.
The scoreboard read 136-20 at three-quarter-time, and onlookers would’ve been forgiven for thinking the margin might eclipse the previous one against Sandhurst of 148, but the Kangaroos showed some fight late.
One goal early in the quarter and two to finish it off meant it was three goals apiece in the last, with Golden Square ultimately taking out the win 161-39.
Magor was named best-on for the home side alongside Charles Neilson, Adam Miles, Isaac Smithwick, Rhys Carman and Louis Thompson.
Broadford has the week off next week, but will travel to Kangaroo Flat the week after in a battle of the kangaroos in the annual Pat Cronin Foundation Round.
