AT the Australian Plants Society, Mitchell Group Inc. Annual Spring Native Plant Expo, plants that can be locally grown provided an aromatic outing for those who visited the Wallan Neighbourhood House on Saturday.
Over 200 cut flowers were included in the flower gallery to show case how colorful and unique local indigenous flora is.
Stall holders presented native species to sell at fantastic prices and along with book sales, Mitchell Shire Council’s Gardens for Wildlife and the Wallan Environmental Group were on hand to share advice and recruit members.
Of significance there were 120 Grevillea species and several door prizes given to randomly selected visitors and the Kilmore Art Society members held a small exhibition featuring paintings with nature themes.
A delicious afternoon tea with cakes homemade with love by the members of the groups was a highlight.
Treasurer Christine Cram said their group has many talents.
“If I do say so myself, we are a really lovely group of people,” she said.
“We have people in our group who are sellers, and they have options to go to other places, and they choose our expo because we’re really nice people.
“We had 387 visits this year, our best yet.
“David James was the lucky winner of the exquisite jewellery handcrafted by one of our members daughters.”
The Mitchell Native Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month, at the John Taylor Rooms in Kilmore, at 7.30pm.
“After our meetings we do one of the best suppers that you are ever likely to see,” Ms Cram said.
“It’s something that we take great pride in.
“There is a speaker so there is some education and there’s door prizes so there is an opportunity to leave with a new plant and afterwards we socialise.”
