GRASSROOTS fundraising helped raise $8000 for last year’s Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.
All funds raised locally will remain in the local community, allowing the Salvos to meet the specific needs of the most disadvantaged and marginalised residents in Mitchell Shire.
Since COVID-19 changed the world, people have come together using digital platforms to support disadvantaged people.
Broadford Captain Lauren Kirkham joined the Mitchell Salvation Army Corps three years ago and said Mitchell Shire’s digital Red Shield Appeal helps them provide practical and emotional support for the homeless.
“I grew up on the outskirts of Ballarat, and I remember going door to door to raise funds,” she said.
“The digital door knock helps because not as many people are at home these days, and there are not as many volunteers.
“Last year, we raised $8000. It’s a combined effort, with our volunteers shaking tins at intersections, and our trivia night made a difference.
“We are very grateful to our volunteers. They have formed a great community; they are a support to each other as well.
“We’re aiming to raise $10,000 before June 30 with another trivia night at our Seymour site, 8 Victoria Street on Saturday, June 21 at 7pm.”
There’s still time to host an event to raise funds at your place. Invite friends, family and neighbours to a movie night, a disco or a garage sale.
Ms Kirkham has volunteered to make a jelly slice or lemon meringue to help hosts cater for their guests.
Another alternative is to rise to a challenge, creative or physical and recruit sponsors. It could be singing a song or spotting wildlife targets. It could even be a community treasure hunt or a tennis tournament.
There’s no time to waste, these benevolent acts of kindness have to be completed by Monday, June 30 to count in the nationwide tally.
