CITY of Whittlesea, in a partnership with Sustainability Victoria, is hosting Detox Your Home this month for residents who need to safely dispose of hazardous household chemicals from their sheds, cupboards and kitchens.
Detox Your Home is a free and convenient disposal service, helping to keep local families, waterways, animals and the environment safe from pollution.
The event is staffed by expert chemists who identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licensed facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal.
Common products collected include weedkiller, pesticides, bleach, brake fluid and rat poison.
All are harmful to the environment and should not be placed in kerbside bins or poured down sinks.
Common domestically used chemicals collected include products that contain acids and alkalis, including bleach, rust remover, hydrochloric acid and oven cleaners.
From the garage there are many chemicals that are detrimental to the environment if they are not disposed of safety so bring brake fluid, coolant, and fuels including petrol, diesel and kerosene, machine oil and lubricant containers to the event.
The garden shed is another area where hazardous chemicals are stored so Detox Your Home is the perfect opportunity to get rid of fertiliser, fuel (old lawn mower/power tools fuel), weedkillers/herbicides, insect sprays, pesticides and pool chemicals containers safely.
Detox Your Home no longer collects halon (yellow) fire extinguishers, cosmetics, empty aerosols and oils, including cooking oil. However, you can learn more about how to dispose of these items by visiting Sustainability Victoria’s website.
Start the year with a clean slate, by sorting your unused chemical containers in preparation for drop off at the Epping’s Works Depot at 68-96 Houston Street, Epping, on Saturday, January 31, from 9am to 3pm.
