A MAJOR amount of important safety projects across the Mitchell Shire will be able to start thanks to the funding from the Victorian Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP), in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is working alongside all 79 Victorian councils to plan, design and deliver safety improvements on the highest-risk local roads, intersections and precincts.
Mitchell Shire Council (MSC) received funding to complete multiple projects across the Shire, with some already underway or completed.
There have been speed reductions in Seymour’s town centre, along with multiple high-speed rural roads across the Shire.
There is ongoing work happening in both Lithgow Street, Beveridge and Windham Street, Wallan, with both receiving raised pedestrian crossing and a speed limit reduction. This is also being completed alongside other works to add a roundabout to the Lithgow Street and Patterson Road intersection.
There will be a closure of access to Chittick Place from Oak Street and Anzac Avenue by extension of the kerb and footpath.
There will also be raised pedestrian priority crossings works at Rail Street in Wandong, Wallis Street and Station Street in Seymour, Pollard Street in Seymour, Powlett Street in Broadford, and Murchison Street and High Street in Broadford.
Council is currently planning the upcoming works and will inform the community when dates are confirmed and the impacts they will have.
MSC Mayor Councillor John Dougall said the funding would make a tangible difference to safety for all road users.
“Improving safety on our local roads is a priority for Council and our community. These upgrades are about reducing risk, preventing crashes and saving lives,” he said.
“The Safe Local Roads and Streets Program recognises that local governments face significant challenges in delivering road safety improvements.
“This investment gives us the resources to build safer, more forgiving roads that protect everyone, whether they’re driving, riding, or walking.
“On behalf of our community, I want to thank the Victorian Government for this funding, which will allow us to address some of the highest-risk areas in our road network.”
