PREP students across the state recently celebrated a big milestone in their learning, bringing up 100 days of learning across their schooling journey.

At St Mary’s Primary School in Lancefield, the Prep students were given the choice of celebrating 100 days in their own style, with the choice of dress ups available to all the students, according to teacher Chris Zarb.

“Some of them are dressed up as 100 years old, and some are dressed up as 100 days brighter, so they had the choice this year. It’s about the kids, so we let them choose what they’d like to dress up as,” she said.

“They’ve been amazing, our classes are both beautiful groups and seem to be really enjoying their learning at school. They’ve come a long way in just 100 days.

“They are a very keen bunch.”

Ms Zarb said there was a lot of planning that went into the 100 days celebration and added that it was also a great way to get the students invested into mathematics from an early age, particularly in terms of learning through counting by tens.

“They brought in a bag of 100 things. They were very creative with that. For example, someone brought in 100 crayons, 100 shells, 100 pompoms, 100 loom bands,” she said.

“We are also making 100 crowns, saying they are 100 days smarter, decorating that with special jewels, and we were also going to the hall to do rotational activities. The kids have been decorating biscuits in the shape of 100, making fairy bread with hundreds and thousands, making 100 monsters, with 100 body parts, playing a board game race to 100 and other fun activities.

“It’s a lot of fun and we build up to it. It’s a great maths activity. We add on one more day, we talk about numbers and counting by tens, and they learn a lot of maths that way, and it’s very meaningful.”
