GO the mighty Warriors, at LB Davern reserve last Sunday Wandong Junior Football Club (WJFC) held their annual sponsors day in style.

Free face painting was the order of the day, and the sponsor’s tent was full to the brim with bite-sized savouries and sweets.

But it was the Fight MND 11 ice buckets challenge that drew the crowds.

The charity event is undoubtedly one of football’s most hair-brained schemes. The famous Big Freeze charity is in its eleventh year.

It was created in 2014 by an AFL football great Neale Daniher after his motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis. He hopes to find a cure for the rare disease that selectively affects motor neuron cells resulting in weakness and eventual paralysis that impacts breathing, movement, speech, and swallowing.

Over the years, the WJFC have raised over $8K to help freeze MND, and by swapping their usual black and yellow socks for blue and pouring icy cold water over their coaches heads, they donated an extra $581.35 over the weekend.

It’s an exciting time at the Warriors club with a new U16 side.

They were bested on the day by the Kyabram Bombers, 1.3 (9) to 28.21 (189).

In other results, the U14 Warriors defended their position on top of the ladder against the Alexander Rebels, 9.13 (67) to 2.3 (15).

The U12S ran away with an easy win against St Mary’s, 15.13 (103) to 0.0 to stay third on the ladder after the Broadford Roos and Seymour Lions respectively.

U9 and U10 teams do not have a ladder at this young grade.

Club member Chris George thanked all their sponsors.

“Without them, we can’t do what we do,” he said.

“…our major sponsors have contributed to new playing equipment, guernseys, training tops, and new spectator benches.”

“Thank you to GMH Paving Concreting group, DG Earthworks, and Northern Concrete group. A special thanks also to Australian Caravan Centre, Leader Caravans, and Supreme Caravans.”
