Mitchell Shire Council has officially appointed Mary Agostino as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership milestone for the growing municipality.
Following an extensive and competitive recruitment process, Ms Agostino was selected to take the helm after serving as Interim CEO since December 2024.
With a wealth of experience in local government and a strong connection to the Mitchell community, her appointment signals a new era for the Council as it prepares to tackle a period of rapid growth and transformation.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor John Dougall praised Ms Agostino’s appointment, citing her strategic acumen, deep local knowledge, and inclusive leadership style.
“Mary has demonstrated unwavering commitment to Mitchell Shire and a genuine passion for public service,” Cr Dougall said.
“She brings an enterprising mindset, a strong sense of purpose and the kind of inclusive leadership that will help us deliver real results for our community.”
Cr Dougall noted that the leadership change comes at a pivotal time, as the Council prepares to unveil its new four-year Council Plan for 2025–2029.
“There is a real push from both Council and the organisation to align our priorities and tackle the issues our community cares about most,” Cr Dougall said.
“That includes managing rapid growth, investing in our road network, ensuring long-term financial sustainability and continuing to advocate strongly to other levels of government for the infrastructure and services our residents deserve.”
“Our Council has made a strong commitment to financial responsibility, improved transparency and better engagement with our community,” he said.
Ms Agostino has held senior roles at Mitchell Shire since 2017, and previously served as acting CEO in 2019–2020. Her local government experience also spans executive roles at the Cities of Whittlesea, Wyndham, and Merri-Bek.
Reflecting on her appointment, Ms Agostino expressed her enthusiasm and deep commitment to the role.
“Mitchell is a dynamic, fast-growing community with immense potential,” she said. “I’m honoured to lead an organisation with such passionate staff and to work alongside Council to continue delivering infrastructure and services that support our community’s needs.”
“As we move forward, I’m focused on evolving our culture, strengthening our systems and ensuring that everything we do reflects the expectations and aspirations of the people we serve.”
Ms Agostino will formally commence her role as Chief Executive Officer this month.
They should have tried to get one from outside the Council network to bring new life into he Council, promoting from with in and getting one from the network of councils does not enhance enthusiasm and value to rate payers we have all seen it before
