Northern Health has launched a new program designed to support children undergoing tonsillectomy.
A feature of the Paediatric Tonsillectomy Digital Care Pathway, the My Health@Northern app provides information regarding the surgery, allowing for a thorough and comprehensive overview of what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
Parents of children undergoing the surgery are invited to partake in the app’s daily recovery checker, a 10-day program which allows the Paediatric Virtual Care Team to monitor recovery progress and quickly identify potential issues.
Though one of the most common surgeries for children, one significant concern after tonsillectomy is the risk of tonsillar haemorrhage, a serious complication that may require hospital readmission.
However, the introduction of the new app aims to counteract this issue by supporting early intervention, and ultimately, ensuring the safety of patients, which Northern Health ANUM Ward Two Anita Joshi noted was a key pillar of the organisation.
“At Northern Health, safety isn’t just a goal, it is our foundation,” she said.
“Every child deserves the best care, starting with a commitment to safety.
“Helping children to go home sooner is a key initiative. By minimising hospital stays, we not only enhance the comfort and wellbeing of our young patients but also improve overall healthcare efficiency and outcomes.”
Northern Health Director VVSC and Director Paediatric Victorian Virtual Emergency Department Dr Joanna Lawrence echoed Ms Joshi’s sentiments.
“By partnering with families to monitor post-operative progress, Northern Health will be able to proactively identify children with pain and hydration issues, and intervene early, avoiding unnecessary representations to hospital,” she said.
“This responsive model of care will ensure every child has a safe and positive post-operative experience.”
