A local community group has been named as one of 33 successful recipients of the Bupa Landcare Grants program.
The Wallan Environment Group, who is part of the Merri Creek Management Committee, was successful in their application to fund stage one of the Wallan Urban Forest project, which will see Indigenous flora and fauna planted along Taylors Lane and Taylors Creek Reserve.
Overall, the grants will support the planting of 82,500 native trees, shrubs, and groundcovers across Australia.
Landcare Australia Chief Executive Dr Shane Norrish was proud to partner with private health insurer Bupa to support the efforts of environmental groups.
“We can’t wait to see these projects come to life, and I am proud of our partnership with Bupa and the commitment to empower communities to make a meaningful impact on both the health of their local environments and people’s wellbeing—values that lie at the very heart of Landcare,” he said.
“It is also inspiring to witness the dedication of so many volunteers, groups, and organisations who are passionate about supporting their communities.”
Established in 2010 following the expansion of the Friends of Wallan Creek group, the Wallan Environment Group focuses on weed removal, revegetation, and mulching works to cover the natural environments in and around Wallan.
