Time is running out to watch the Broadford Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS) bring 9 to 5: The Musical to the stage, with only two shows left.
A production that has gained popularity in recent years, 9 to 5: The Musical is based on the 1980 film directed by Colin Higgins, with music and lyrics by 9 to 5 singer Dolly Parton.
A bigger show compared to BATS’ previous productions, including its most recent Are you Being Served?, the new musical has pushed the boundaries of the society’s performances, featuring larger sets, an expanded cast, and more scenes.
Director Shaun Geerlings-Parker said it was a ‘jam-packed show’ that celebrated female empowerment.
“We like to try and shake it up, and this is obviously a very different show … lots of singing, and lots of dancing,” he said.
“It’s quite a funny show, so [the audience] got to be ready to laugh and sort of have a good time out.
“There’s lots of quick things changing … from a director’s point of view, it’s been a challenge because it’s constantly on the move with the show.
“Also, this show is very much about showing the empowerment of women, there’s three leading women that transform the office from [character] Franklin Heart.”
Returning to BATS in a leading role, Janelle Cowan will be playing hard-working woman Violet Newstead. Characters Doralee Rhodes and Judy Bernley will be played by Alicia Biancon and Brooke Leech respectively, with Ms Leech’s role marking her BATS debut.
Other new faces in this year’s production include AJ Russell and Faith Coff, who will both perform in the ensemble to portray Bob Enright, Joe, and Kathy. Additionally, Lillian Kilroy will debut as Maria Delgado, while also performing in the ensemble.
Mr Geerlings-Parker said the cast have made the show their own, giving the musical a ‘BATS’ spin.’
“We’ve put a bit of a BATS spin on it, making it work in our space,” he said.
“We’ve got some locals, and how we develop it, we’re trying to keep it as traditional as possible.
“We’re reusing things, building things new for the show, making new bits and pieces … everything’s done by our group of volunteers.”
Next year’s production promises to be another big one, with the jukebox musical We Will Rock You, featuring the iconic songs of legendary rock band Queen coming to the stage.
BATS will perform its final shows of 9 to 5: The Musical this Friday and Saturday night, both running from 8pm–10pm at the Broadford Hall.
The Review will draw winners for a double pass for the final show on November 30.
