An online tool used to report wombat and burrow sightings and assist in the aid of mange treatment is now available.
Australia’s wombats are under threat from roadkill and a highly contagious skin disease—sarcoptic mange— which if left untreated, can result in a horrible death.
Biologist from Western Sydney University, Associate Professor, and Chief Scientist of WomSAT Julie Oldwhich developed the tool to understand wombats and their habits better.
With the assistance of citizen scientists across Australia, this online tool also helps to understand and combat the threats wombats face by providing an up-to-date, broader picture of what is occurring among wombat populations.
Through WomSAT, citizen scientists can log their wombat sightings to ensure conservation of the species.
