Kilmore and District Pony Club (KDPC) held their most recent rally on Sunday, July 21.

Intended to prep riders for the KDPC’s upcoming annual Combined Training event, eight riders and their horses attended the day to practice eventing, the term given to equestrian events comprised of show jumping, dressage, and cross-country courses.

Each course is designed to test the various qualities and skills of horse and rider, with show jumping a test of agility, dressage a test of discipline, and cross-country a test of endurance.

Sunday’s rally began with a gear check, where horse and rider were inspected to ensure their equipment was safe before separating into three groups based on skill level and ability.

Riders then participated in two lessons with relevant trainers across the courses, with each lesson tailored to the rider’s needs. In cross country, riders were taught how to manage their horses along the course, with tips and tricks shared to help build up some of the younger horses’ confidence in tackling the daunting track.

Across the field at show jumping, riders were treated to an eight-jump obstacle course. Focusing on their horses’ agility, riders were instructed on how to approach each jump, change leads, and use their knowledge of strides between each obstacle to manoeuvre around the course efficiently and effectively.

In dressage, riders focused heavily on the connection between horse and rider, and basic dressage etiquette such as saluting.

The upcoming Combined Training event will see riders attempt each course in front of accredited judges in the ultimate test of skill. Registrations are still open for keen riders, and close Monday, August 12. Grades 1 to 6 are available for Pony Club riders, and Grades 1 to 5 are available for Open riders.

For those not interested in competing but interested in attending the event to learn more, the KDPC extends a warm invitation to the wider public to spectate and chat with the team.
