The Metro Junior Development Series stars from the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) recently competed against the best from opposing metro leagues in the AFL Victoria Metro Junior Development Series (MJDS).
Three games were played, with the first on Wednesday, May 29, and the remaining two over the King’s Birthday weekend.
The Wallan Junior Football Club (WJFC) has a strong record of its players advancing to higher competition, and recently nominated Billy Brundell for the squad.
Brundell was among 12 of their junior players put forward for selection, and was chosen after two days of trialling. He is listed as number 44, a clever utility who works both ways and has great goal sense.
NFNL General Manager of Football Operations Jeff Downes is excited about the series and the opportunity presented to selected players.
“To be selected to represent the NFNL and our league is an outstanding achievement for all players, and an amazing experience and opportunity awaits all our squad players,” he said.
“Importantly we are united as a squad program team and in the boy’s program, the teams have been selected to ensure we have a good balance across each side in terms of position requirements.”
At home, Brundell plays in the midfield. He captains the side and wears number one for the Under 14 team, who are currently on top of the ladder.
Coach Mick Dalton has trained Brundell for three years, and said he was a caring and humble kid who cares about his teammates and lifts others up by his sheer presence.
“He’s a student of the game and he’s always wanting to learn. We’re a small club in comparison to some and we had twelve players who got there and showed they have the ability and can work hard towards selection,” he said.
Brundell hopes to be among the junior stars selected for the NFNL Under 15 representative team next year.
